Volunteer teaching English in the southern Ecuador – requirements & tasks

Loja, celebrated as a hub of art and culture, also offers stunning landscapes, perfect for those who love the outdoors. It’s considered one of the cleanest and safest cities in Ecuador, nestled amidst mountains, rivers, and historic towns rich in culture. And, of course, the local cuisine is simply delicious!

We’d be delighted to have you join our academy. Here’s a quick overview of how volunteering works: your primary role is to engage in conversation with the students. It’s really that simple – just chat with them! You’ll be interacting with students aged 12 and above, with English proficiency levels ranging from beginner to advanced. Your focus will be on helping them improve their listening and speaking skills, with a particular emphasis on pronunciation.

Your contribution is invaluable as it provides students the chance to practice speaking with you, learn about your culture, country, and interests, while you get to know them too.

The time commitment is 4 hours per day from Monday to Friday, with flexible rotating schedules that can be adjusted to accommodate other activities. Additionally, we ask for 2 Saturdays per month, with a reduced workload of 3 hours on those days.

To reach Loja, you have two options:

  1. Fly to Catamayo: You can take a flight from Mariscal Sucre airport in Quito to Catamayo. From there, it’s a quick 40-minute taxi ride to Loja, costing about $20. I’ll reimburse you for the taxi fare.
  2. Take a bus: Alternatively, you can opt for a bus from the terrestrial terminal in Quito. The bus journey is around 12 hours, so it’s advisable to travel overnight. The bus will drop you off at the Loja terminal, where I’ll personally pick you up.
